Not receiving a MAC address from the server, but I have link

Postby admin » Fri Jul 13, 2012 7:03 am

Many times I have had a server admin come to me and tell me that a server is linked to the switch, but does not work. After looking into the issue, I find that I am not learning a MAC from the server.

I have found the most common issue to be a configuration mismatch on the port type.

The switch will be set as an access port and the server as a trunk (802.1q tagging), or the other way around. If this is the case, the two devices will link up, but no MAC information will be passed.

One of the two parties didn't fulfill the request correctly on the port setup.

The only other issue that I have found with this is an outdated driver on the Server. If the ports are setup correctly on both sides, have the server admin update the NIC driver on the server.

If you have found another reason for this, please reply to this post I would like to hear about it.
